At MiNT (Masterclass in Neurotechnology), we have used the term neurotechnology for many years to describe any technology designed to support people with neurological impairment. In our context, this includes a wide range of tools and systems such as robotics, sensor-based technologies, wearables, functional electrical stimulation (FES), brain–computer interfaces (BCI), virtual reality (VR), simulators, and many others.

However, it is important to note that the definition of neurotechnology is evolving. More recently, organisations including the UK government have adopted a narrower definition that refers only to technologies that record and modulate the activity of the human nervous system; specifically, brain–computer interfaces that interact with the brain, and bioelectronic devices that interface with the spinal cord or peripheral nerves.

We recognise that this shift in terminology may cause some confusion. Within MiNT, we continue to use neurotechnology in its broader sense, encompassing all technologies that contribute to improving outcomes for individuals with neurological conditions.

Throughout this course, when we refer to neurotechnology, we are inviting you to think broadly about the full spectrum of technologies that can enhance neurological rehabilitation, not only brain and neural interface systems.
